Read this guide and find a tea (or two) you love!

1. Caffeine vs Caffeine-free/ Teas vs Tisanes

True teas come from the Camellia sinensis plant and the most commonly known example would be green tea. Teas made from Camellia sinensis plants, such as Simply Natural’s Organic Green Tea and Darjeeling Tea (which is a kind of black tea) are considered true teas and contain caffeine. On the other hand, herbal tea or we should call it tisane, is any plant-derived drink other than true tea. It can come from a water-based infusion of herbs, spices, flowers, leaves, etc and usually does not contain caffeine. Though most herbal teas are caffeine-free, there is an exception- Yerba Mate Tea that is made from caffeine-containing ingredients- Ilex paraguariensis plant.

So our pick for beginners would be Organic Chamomile Tea with pleasant light floral aroma, Organic Hibiscus Tea with cranberry-like tart fruity flavour, Organic Peppermint Tea with refreshing minty taste and lastly our Organic Tropical Wonders made from the perfect trio of lemongrass, mulberry leaves and pandan leaves with its refreshing scent and flavour. These teas contain no caffeine at all and are suitable for those hesitant to drink tea due to its caffeine content.

3. Teas for health

Teas are generally healthy, and some drink teas for specific health benefits. Caffeine-containing teas are best for improving energy and alertness and are suitable to be drunk in the morning. Generally, true teas are believed to be ‘cooling’. Nevertheless, the properties of herbal teas depend on the ingredients they are being made from. For example, teas made from mulberry leaf and bitter gourd are extremely cooling and recommended to be drunk to expel heat from the body. They are great to be drunk when you are having ‘heaty’ signs like sore throat, headache or mouth ulcers. On the other hand, teas like cinnamon tea, turmeric tea and our exclusive Organic Cinnamon and Ginger Tea are ‘warming’ in nature, thus suitable to be drunk when you are down with flu or during cold weather. They are also recommended for females to ease menstrual cramps. Certain types of teas or tea blends such as bitter gourd tea series are best known for maintaining healthy blood sugar, lakadong turmeric tea for anti-inflammation and pain-relieving property, Misai Kucing tea (aka Cat’s Whiskers Tea) for healthy kidney and with diuretics function. Simply Natural, herbal tea blends also present certain health functions- Organic Smooth Digestion Tea for constipation relief, Organic Mother’s Herbs Tea to increase breast milk for lactating mothers and lastly Organic Cold Care Tea that strengthens immunity and relieves common cold and flu symptoms.
