Organic Tangerine USA
Status: Certified organic
Highlight: Organic tangerines are hybrids of mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) or (Citrus x tangerina) and are smaller and sweeter than oranges, with a thin skin and a more intense flavour. As the the fruit was originally imported from Tangiers, Morocco it became known as a tangerine.
Organic tangerines like other members of the citrus family contain ~85% water, 13% carbohydrates, very little fat or protein with a decent amount of fibre. They are rich in vitamin C and also provide 14% recommended daily intake of carotenoids including beta-carotene & beta-cryptoxanthin. These are well absorbed in mixed diets and help prevent eye disease especially age-related macular degeneration.
Do use the organic tangerine peel, as it is extremely beneficial containing tangeretin a flavonoid antioxidant which shows promise in lowering cholesterol. Known traditionally in China as 橘皮 or Jú pí, the pith is scraped away from the skin and then simply sun-dried for about a week, turning constantly. To speed this up it can be dried in the oven @ 90°C for ~30 mins turning regularly. This is a delicious addition to Chinese dishes and to a mug of mulled wine.
