Highlight: Organic Red Chillies belong to the Nightshade family (Solinaceae), the same family as potatoes, tomatoes, capsicum and brinjal. They offer Vitamins B6, C & K, as well as a wide range of carotenoid anti-oxidants. The main carotenoid is Capsanthin, a powerful anti-cancer component which is also responsible for their red colour. The noticeable active component in our beloved chilies is Capsaicin which causes a burning sensation. Capsaicin acts to numb pain, it increases metabolism promoting weight loss and is as an anti-inflammatory, supporting heart health.
Chilies are thought to have originated in the Amazon basin and are found all across Central America. Since discovery of the New World they have been brought to India by the Portuguese and become part of the national cuisine. They also now feature in Caribbean, Chinese, Korean and South East Asian dishes and may add a small note or be the basis of something like sambal.
