Highlight: Garlic (Allium sativum L. Fam. Liliaceae) has been a very important medicinal herb since 2,700 BCE and is thought to have originated in Central Asia. In China it has been one of the most used remedies since this time, designated Yang and recommended for those who suffered depression.
It has a pungent, sharp smell helps clear nasal passageways and is considered a good food to eat to reduce the effects of flu. The French phytotherapist Lekrek had success using a tincture of garlic for severe infections of the lungs and as a preventative remedy for the ‘Spanish flu’ pandemic in 1918.
Garlic helps prevent blood vessels ageing, reduces bad cholesterol and generally protects the cardiovascular system.
Purple or in Spanish ‘morado’ garlic is ‘hardneck’ garlic with cloves covered in thick easy to peel skin. The purple colour is indicative of the presence of anthocyanin and this garlic also has a higher allicin content than white garlic. Allicin from raw garlic is associated with the protective anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic effects of one of its component organo-sulphur compounds diallyl trisulfade.
