Highlights: Organic New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia tetragonioides) is native to East Asia, it is also known as Botany Bay or Warrigal greens in Australia, and Maori spinach in New Zealand. The plant grows happily in warm climates and along coastlines in saline soil, where it was found by New World explorers and used to combat scurvy.

Although nutritionally similar to spinach, New Zealand spinach does not belong to the amaranth family Amaranthaceae, but rather the fig-marigold family Aizoaceae. It is a great addition to a balanced diet with a calcium to phosphorous ratio ideal for calcium absorption in the body and a wealth of carotenoids and of course the vitamin C complex which helped reduce symptoms of scurvy in the long distance voyagers.

High-fibre and low-calorie, it is also useful for weight loss, but is best avoided by those with a tendency to form kidney stones, as like spinach, it too has a high level of oxalic acid.

The young leaves can be eaten raw in salads or are excellent stir-fried in combination with XO sauce and seafood as in the recipe below.
