Organic Curly Kale belongs to the Cabbage family (Brassica sp.) along with Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kohlrabi, and bok choy. These vegetables contribute glucosinolates, sulphur containing glycosides to the diet, which act as cancer inhibiting agents, reducing inflammation by activating detoxification enzymes, clearing free radicals, and inducing immune functions
For those that suffer with oxalate based kidney stones or take blood thinners such as Coumarin or Warfarin there may be a need to avoid or limit kale intake. If eaten raw, Kale goitrogens may also interfere with thyroid function when eaten in high amounts, blocking the iodine the thyroid needs to function.
