Highlights: Baby Kai Lan (Brassica oleracea var. alboglabra) 小芥兰 is one of the iconic dishes of Cantonese cuisine, stir-fried with garlic or served with oyster sauce & a little toasted sesame oil. Like other Asian leafy greens it is nutrient dense offering a similar profile to Kai Lan 芥兰 but is more tender and sweeter.
The cabbage family (Brassica sp.) in general as well as being excellent sources of dietary fibre, are antioxidant rich with vitamins C and E, carotenoids and glycosides of the flavonoids quercetin and kaempferol. However the most important contribution they make to health are the glucosinoates, sulphur containing glycocides. These act as cancer inhibiting agents. They reduce inflammation by activating detoxification enzymes, clearing free radicals, and inducing immune functions.
