Valued for their carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin which help protect against age-related macular degeneration, they are also a useful source of vitamin K which helps calcium maintenance and reduces the risk of osteoporosis and the incidence of post menopausal fractures.
As well as being rich in carotenoid antioxidants the leaves also contain anti-mutagenic compounds which slow the rate of mutation of cancer cells. Organic sweet potato leaves have high polyphenol content of caffeic acid and di & tricaffeoylquinic acids which have been observed to depress human cancer proliferation in leukaemia, stomach cancer and colon cancer.
