Highlights: Brinjal (Solanum melongena) 茄子Qié zi, is a member of the nightshade family Solanaceae and is thought to have originated in India where a form still grows wild to this day. It has however spread throughout tropical Asia and is recorded as already domesticated in the Chinese agricultural classic Qimin Yaoshu records from the early 6th century.

Extremely popular in China, it is one of the ‘treasures’ in 地三鲜 De sān xiān with capsicum and potatoes. Roasted, grilled or deep fried it is often served with a delicious sauce made with oil, garlic, chilli, spring onions or coriander or adds its soft texture to curries. In Japan, it is split and coated with an umami miso dressing toasted under the grill.

Packed full of beneficial phytonutrients, the skin contains the flavonoid nasunin, an anthocyanin in the purple skin which as well as being a free-radical scavenger, helps prevent plaque build-up in the cardiovascular system. Around 70-90% of the total polyphenols in the fruit itself is chlorogenic acid, one of the most potent free radical scavengers found in plants, which has antimutagenic (anti-cancer), antimicrobial, anti-low density lipoproteins (bad cholesterol) and antiviral activity.

Nutrient-dense, high-fibre, low-calorie what’s not to like about this excellent organic fruit?
