The beautiful Star Ruby grapefruit was originally a ‘sport’ growing on a grapefruit tree in San Benito, Texas. Since its discovery in the 1930’s this variant of Citrus paradisi and is now grown in Spain and South Africa.

Grapefruit 柚子 Yòu zi, are rich sources of both the B and C complex vitamins, organic Star Ruby grapefruit are also an excellent source of carotenoids, particularly lycopene which adds the delicate pink colour. All citrus fruit contain the soluble fibre pectin which forms a sticky gel attracting cholesterol-rich bile and carrying it out of the body. The fibre also contributes to a feeling of fullness which makes grapefruit a useful weight-loss fruit to consider when dieting.

Fresh grapefruit is contraindicated with certain medications such as statins, calcium channel blockers, immunosuppressants, certain cancer medications and Entocort, which is used to treat Crohn’s disease. Grapefruit reduces breakdown and elimination of these substances, which can result in increased blood levels of the drug.
