FAQs about Honey

1.Can metal spoons be used to scoop honey?

It’s commonly believed that honey which is acidic in nature will corrode the metal spoon, however corrosion of metal is less likely to happen as the action of scooping honey only takes a few seconds. Nevertheless, it’s not recommended to store a metal spoon within your honey for a long time.

2.Why the honey I bought crystallize? Is crystallized honey still edible?

Crystallization of honey is normal, as honey is made from more than 70% natural sugar (primarily glucose and fructose) and less than 20% water. High sugar content tends to separate from the water, forming the crystallized appearance. Other factors that can cause crystallization of honey include higher percentage of glucose (than fructose) in honey composition, low storage temperature and higher amount of pollen in honey (usually seen in raw honey).

Thus, crystallize honey is still edible.

3.Is it true that honey never spoils?

Under proper storage condition (Cool, dry place, in properly sealed container), honey has almost eternal shelf life. It’s long shelf life is attributed to the naturally acidic nature and low moisture content, making it inappropriate for bacteria growth. However, best before date or expiry date is printed on packaging due to commercial requirement.

4. Can diabetics take honey?

Honey contains more than 70% sugar, excessive consumption of honey would still result in blood sugar spike. But honey does make a better alternative than table sugar as it’s lower in GI and rich in other valuable nutrients. So, diabetics can still take honey, but it’s recommended not to take more than 1 tablespoon a day.
